The symposium took place in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, between August 25-27. The main objective of this symposium was to gather policymakers, researchers, development partners and other influential players for critical discussions on setting priorities, assessing tradeoffs, and making policy choices. It aimed to inform education policymakers in the region on the latest evidence and thinking on the economic and social returns to different investment strategies and to assist them in this important decision-making process.

The symposium was co-hosted with Ministry of National Education, the Government of Indonesia. A team of 23 resource people including renowned experts contributed to its successful delivery. 125 participants from most EAP countries participated in this symposium, including high-level policymakers and implementers from government agencies, researchers, and representatives from donor agencies and partner institutions as well as from the civil society and the business community. We had country delegations from Cambodia, China, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Mongolia, PNG, the Philippines, Thailand, Timor-Leste, and Vietnam. We invited regional institutions from Australia, Hong Kong and Korea. We also invited donors and development partners from ADB, AusAID, the Ducth Embassy, JBIC, JICA, Sampoerna Foundation, UNESCO, UNICEF, and USAID
The workshop received very positive feedback from the participants. The World Bank will follow up with the countries to see if further assistance is needed.
